"Midthus" is inspired by the most typical house found along the Norwegian coastline, with roots going back to sailors' houses from the 19th century. Like its ancestors, the floor plan frees up the outer wall, allowing for flexible placement of windows according to the direction of the main entrance, prevailing views and lighting conditions of different plots. In the traditional 19th century mid-aisle house, the mid-aisle contained the staircase, entrance hall and storage. In "Midthuset",this core contains modern facilities such as laundry rooms, bathrooms, technical connections such as water, sewage, electricity, heating and ventilation. In addition, the staircase and storage are integrated into this core. Just as the mid-pipe houses placed the chimney in the middle of the houses so that there were possibilities for heat sources in all adjacent rooms, the core is located centrally in the building and has short routes for heat, air and electricity to all rooms in the house.
Today's high construction costs mean that houses must be more efficient than before. The "Midthus" types are designed to be compact and small single-family homes with efficient solutions. The houses are designed as a building system and are easy to adapt for optimal flexibility. This makes it easy to build on the houses over time according to planned patterns. The buildings are also built in modules in a factory and transported to the construction site.
"Midthuset"is a small house with big features that retains some of the best aspects of traditional house types when it comes to views, circulation and floor plan. Midthuset offers the best qualities of Norwegian historical building practices combined with architect-designed solutions and modern prefabrication, digital production and rational construction processes.
Midthuset is built by Lindals Modul in Tvedestrand, Norway
